Mitsubishi Corporation’s Airport Businesses in Japan See Hope for a Sustained Recovery in 2023

Mitsubishi Corporation’s airport businesses in Japan are hopeful for a strong sustained recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic with the reopening of borders to foreign travellers from 11 October 2022.
At Fukuoka Airport, the number of international passengers handled in the last three months of 2022 after the October 11 reopening of borders was 561,415, which was 78% that of the total number of international passengers handled for the entire year.

The total number of international passengers handled at Fukuoka Airport in 2022 was 715,988. This was much higher than the 21,715 international passengers handled in 2021, but still much lower than the 6.4 million international passengers handled in 2019 before the pandemic.
While figures for domestic traffic at Fukuoka Airport for 2022 are not yet available, it is interesting to note that that the Fukuoka-Haneda route was one of the busiest global domestic airline routes by number of seats, according to OAG.

At New Chitose Airport serving the city of Sapporo in Hokkaido, most of the international passengers arrived in the last two months of the year 2022 with the onset of the winter holiday season. International passengers in November and December 2022 made up 92% of total international traffic for the year at New Chitose Airport.
