OMA Airports: Mexico’s Northern Gateway Enters a New Investment Cycle

King of the North

Closing our coverage of the main airport operators in Mexico, we turn to Grupo Aeroportuario del Centro Norte, better known as OMA. Its portfolio is smaller than those of international airport groups, but unusually coherent: 13 airports spanning Mexico’s industrial north, regional state capitals, border markets and Pacific resorts. Together they give OMA exposure to business travel, domestic connectivity, manufacturing supply chains, visiting-friends-and-relatives traffic and tourism, rather than leaving performance dependent on a single market.

OMA emerged from the late-1990s opening of Mexico’s airport system to private investment. Its subsidiaries received 50-year concessions beginning in November 1998, and the company went public in 2006 through a concurrent Mexican and US offering. That history still shapes the business: the federal government retains ownership of the airport assets, which revert to the state at the end of the concession term, and OMA must operate, maintain and develop each airport under its concession. Performance depends not on passenger growth alone but on disciplined capital delivery, regulatory compliance and the ability to maintain service across airports with distinct roles.

OMA’s Crown Jewels

Monterrey International Airport, OMA’s flagship and largest asset, anchors the network. It serves one of Mexico’s principal industrial and corporate centres and accounted for more than half of OMA’s passenger traffic in 2025. Its route structure combines dense domestic links with growing services to the United States, making it more than a gateway for Nuevo León: it is an increasingly important international access point for the northern manufacturing corridor.

Beyond Monterrey, the portfolio is deliberately varied. Acapulco, Mazatlán and Zihuatanejo serve leisure destinations; Ciudad Juárez and Reynosa connect border economies; and Chihuahua, Culiacán, Durango, San Luis Potosí, Tampico, Torreón and Zacatecas support regional mobility and local industry. In 2025 the group handled approximately 28.8 million terminal passengers, up 8.5 percent, with international traffic growing faster than the network average.

OMA operates under Mexico’s concession and maximum-tariff framework, in which aeronautical charges are regulated airport by airport and mandatory Master Development Programs set investment commitments reviewed every five years. In December 2025 the Ministry of Infrastructure, Communications and Transport, acting through the Federal Civil Aviation Agency, approved the programs for 2026 to 2030, committing Ps.16,005 million in December 2024 pesos (about US$790 million) to terminal capacity, aeronautical infrastructure, equipment, technology, energy efficiency and decarbonisation.
