J.P. Morgan Asset Management (JPMAM) has spent the past year consolidating, not expanding, its airport exposure. Full ownership of North Queensland Airports — mirroring the sole ownership JPMAM-advised investors have held at Billy Bishop Toronto's terminal operator since 2019 — now anchors a portfolio of wholly controlled infrastructure, even as passenger trends diverge sharply between the two platforms and JPMAM's listed Athens Airport position has quietly shrunk to a token holding.
JPMAM completed its move to full ownership of North Queensland Airports (NQA) on 22 August 2025, buying the remaining 33.9% it did not already own — 27% from Macquarie Asset Management's The Infrastructure Fund and roughly 6.9% from the Perron family's Perron Airports Holdings — for a transaction valuing NQA at approximately AUD3 billion [S1] [S2]. Notably, the deal was a fallback: JPMAM and its co-shareholders had first explored a sale of the whole platform after unsolicited investor interest (reportedly including Vinci), but bids came in below expectations, so JPMAM exercised its pre-emption rights instead [S1]. The Cairns/Mackay platform serves roughly 5.6 million passengers a year across 47 routes.
Capital programmes are advancing under full control. The AUD55 million Cairns terminal upgrade targeted for completion by year-end 2025 and the AUD155 million government-loan-funded works — international terminal modernisation, taxiway overlays, a new Cairns aviation precinct, and airside renewal at Mackay — remain the core capex agenda [S3]. In June 2026, Deutsche Bank committed AUD100 million as sole lender in a 12-year refinancing tranche for NQA, a signal of continued lender confidence in the now wholly owned platform [S4].
