Examining the Airport Privatization Landscape in 2022 – The Americas

The global air transport industry continued to see a strong recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic in 2022, with ACI reporting that global passenger traffic finished 2022 at 72% of 2019 levels. While international passenger numbers reached 60% of 2019 levels, domestic traffic was at 79% of 2019 levels.

In the Latin American and Caribbean market, ACI reported that passenger traffic for the region had reached 91%, while North America’s passenger traffic reached 88.1% of 2019 levels.

Amidst the strong recovery but with a cautious optimism in the light of economic and geopolitical uncertainties looming in the horizon, the speed of airport privatization in the Americas continued to move at a measured pace, with a limited number of large -scale, multi-airport transactions.

The most significant airport privatization activity in the Americas for the year 2022 was seen in Brazil, where the seventh round of airport concessions was completed in August 2022. In this round, Aena was the winner of the bid for the 11 airports, with the largest being Sao Paulo’s Congonhas Airport.
