For the year 2022, the airports managed by GMR Airports saw a 68.5% increase in total passenger throughput to 87.4 million passengers. This was 81.2% of the number of passengers handled by the airports in 2019, indicating that GMR’s airports are close to recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic.

Among the airports managed by GMR Airports, the fastest growing airport in terms of passenger traffic for 2022 would be Mactan-Cebu International Airport, which handled 5.5 million passengers. This was 320.2% higher than the number of passengers handled in 2021.

However, Mactan-Cebu International Airport’s 2022 passenger traffic was still 43.7% that of its 2019 traffic, which would mean a slower recovery compared to the other GMR airports.

Medan's Kualanamu International Airport, a relatively recent GMR operation, handled 3.3 million passengers in 2022, which was a 134.7% increase from the number of passengers handled in the previous year. The airport’s passenger throughput for the year 2022 was 78.7% that of 2019 pre-COVID throughput.

Finally, GMR’s two airports in India, Indira Gandhi International Airport and Rajiv Gandhi International Airport, handled 39.5 million passengers and 19 million passengers in 2022 respectively. Both airports saw a year-on-year growth of around 60% and their 2022 passenger traffic was about 86% of their 2019 pre-COVID levels.

In line with the recovery in passenger traffic, GMR Airports saw improvements in its financial performance as shown in its most recent earnings release.

In mid-February 2023, GMR Airports Infrastructure said in a regulatory filing that it made a consolidated profit after tax of INR104.82crore (INR1.0482bn) in the third quarter of current fiscal year, against a loss of INR515.34crore (INR5.153bn) in the corresponding period of the last fiscal year. Its revenue from operations during the December quarter grew by 29% to INR1,766.36crore (INR17.763bn) from Rs 1,364.13crore (INR13.64bn) in the third quarter of financial year 2021-22.
