Our next annual review of the airport privatization landscape takes us to the Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) region.

For Europe , ACI has reported that for the year 2022, while the region showed a significant surge in passenger traffic during the second and third quarters, the traffic had notably decreased in the fourth quarter, slowing down the recovery. This resulted in Europe recording 1.9 billion passengers (77.3% of 2019 levels) in 2022. 

The recovery in the Middle East was visible, reaching 316.8 million passengers (77.9% of 2019 levels) and thus showing the highest yearly growth rate among the regions in the year 2022.

The passenger traffic in Africa also saw recovery from 114.8 million passengers (50.1% of 2019 levels) in 2021, to 178.6 million passengers in 2022 (77.9% of 2019 levels).

Just like in the Americas, the pace of airport privatization in the EMEA region in 2022 continued to be cautious, with a limited amount of multi-airport transactions. However, 2022 also saw several secondary market transactions as well as the development of a number of new opportunities for the private sector to be involved in.
