Our next annual review of the airport privatization landscape takes us to the Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) region.

Despite the general recovery of most airports in Europe, the Middle East and Africa from the pandemic, the pace of airport privatization in the EMEA region in 2023 continued to be cautious, with a limited amount of airport transactions.

The year 2024 however, is expected to see the conclusion of some primary and secondary airport transactions in the EMEA region, especially in the United Kingdom and Saudi Arabia.

For Europe, ACI has reported that at 2.3 billion passengers, traffic at European airports reached nearly 95% of pre-pandemic levels in 2023. Passenger traffic increased by 19% over 2022, thus standing just –5.3% below pre-pandemic (2019) volumes. ACI also added that in Europe, the market was characterised by significant performance gaps - while many airports achieved absolute passenger traffic records, a large majority were still behind their pre-pandemic volumes.
