For the year 2022, Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) handled a total of 83.9 million passengers at its airports in Malaysia and Turkey. This was a 132.4% increase from the 36.1 million passengers handled in the previous year 2021. However, MAHB’S passenger throughput for 2022 was still 59.4% that of the throughput for the pre-pandemic year of 2019.

Nevertheless, Sabiha Gökçen International Airport in Turkey handled 31.2 million passengers in 2022, which was 86.6% that of 2019 levels, indicating a strong recovery for the airport.

In fact, in terms of international passengers, Sabiha Gökçen International Airport had handled 15.7 million in 2022, which surpassed the 14.2 million international passengers that the airport had handled in the year 2019.

For the first quarter of 2023, MAHB has seen its passenger traffic at all of its 39 airports in Malaysia improved by 124.6% to 18.72 million passengers from 8.34 million in the same period in 2022.

For the month of March 2023, international passenger movements rose 604.7% year-on-year to 2.96 million, the highest monthly volume recorded since March 2020 while domestic passenger movements also increase by 41.3% to reach 3.7 million.

Based on the results for the first quarter of 2023 as well as for March 2023, MAHB expressed in May 2023 that it is expecting that its full-year passenger numbers in 2023 would at least reach up to 75% of 2019 levels.
