In late Dec. 2018, GACA was reported to be readying JED for re-concessioning in the latter half of 2019 or early 2020. In Feb. 2018 GACA terminated the original 20-year concession with the Changi-led consortium for undisclosed reasons (unconfirmed reports indicate that local partner Saudi Naval Services fell out of favor with Saudi leadership). Other hurdles include a poorly developed regulatory framework/mechanisms to facilitate the privatization process and attraction of private capital/expertise. In early Jan. 2020, GACA announced that the new JED airport would be fully operational for the upcoming Ramadan (Apr/May 2020).
