In mid-2019, it was reported that the Manuel Crescencio Rejón Airport (MID), located near the southeast Yucatán capital of Mérida, was under consideration for relocation to a new site near a key railway station along the Maya line. The greenfield 2,000 ha development is proposed to be structured under a public-private partnership. Officials caution that the proposed relocation is only an “idea” at this point, however it has already been presented to President Andrés Manuel López Obrador. Yucatán state gov’t approval is next step in the approval process. Aeropuertos del Sureste (ASUR), current operator of MID with 30 years remaining in its concession, has been identified as a potential investor/operator for the project.
