Jan. 03, 2021 – The USD254m greenfield Sa Pa airport project proposed for a 371ha site in the Cam Con commune of Bảo Yên District has been designed with a terminal capacity of 2.5-3.0m pax/year. Federal gov’t funding of USD133m (52%) has been pledged for airfield and road development, with the northern province of Lao Cai contributing USD39m (15%) for land acquisition, relocation of residents and clearing of unexploded ordinance, plus USD5m (2%) from Vietnam Air Traffic Management Corporation (VATM) for air traffic control facilities. The private sector will be invited to invest the balance of up to USD$77m (30%) under a P3-BOT framework. Construction was originally scheduled to commence in 2020 with completion in 2021. Over 4.2m tourists (~17% int’l) visited Lao Cai in 2018, a 20% rise over 2017.
