In July 2021, the Airport Authority of the City of Gulf Shores (AACGS) issued a Statement of Interest (SOI) Information Package for the Public Private Participation (PPP) project relating to the development of a new Air Service Terminal at Jack Edwards National Airport as the final phase of the airports’ transition from general aviation to commercial service airport (FAR Part 139). Over USD12.2m in improvements have been completed between 2017 and 2021, including a new commercial apron, terminal roadway, utilities and numerous airfield projects designed to meet Part 139 criteria. Concurrently, a new Air Traffic Control (ATC) tower has be constructed on the site. Also, Letters of Intent (LOIs) to provide commercial air service at the airport have been received with a targeted start date for service in April 2022.
