Overview
With Bangkok’s two major international airports; Suvarnabhumi (BKK) and Don Mueang (DMK) operate beyond capacity, the Gov’t of Thailand aims to develop UTP as Bangkok’s third major airport, dubbed the Eastern Airport City Project, in support of its Eastern Economic Corridor (EEC) initiative. A new second terminal was opened in Nov. 2017, increasing capacity from 800,000 to 3m passengers per year. The Royal Thai Navy, UTP’s registered owner, initiated an RFP to award a 50-year concession for planning, construction, management, operations and maintenance of UTP, with the private airport operator being responsible for USD9b in development and financing of a new terminal and supporting infrastructure. A second runway and related infrastructure will be designed, financed and constructed by public authorities.
