In conjunction with a comprehensive 28,000 km2 greenfield city initiative, TRSDC will develop a new greenfield airport as part of the Red Sea project. In the latter half of 2020, TRSDC initiated a competitive process to select an airport operator to assume responsibility for management airfield and terminal operations, aviation services, facilities management and commercial activities, as well as corporate and financial services. The selected operator will assume management of airport operations in three separate stages; the first stage will entail ensuring that all airport designs benefit the customer, the second stage will involve planning a full and seamless operational model for the airport on opening and the third stage will be focused on operationalizing the plan, prioritizing customer experience, sustainability, safety and security. Foster + Partners has been appointed as the lead architect for the project. Set for completion by 2030, the new airport is designed for a peak capacity of 900 passengers per hour, and visitor numbers will be limited to one million/year based on the environmental carrying capacity of the destination. Airfield infrastructure will include a Code F paved runway, Code B seaplane runway and helipad, as well as supporting aprons, taxiways and navigation aids. Commencement of construction was announced Mar. 1, 2021.
