The all-Japanese group led by Mitsui Fudosan, which also includes Japan Airlines, ANA Holdings, Sojitz Corporation, Japan Airport Terminal Co., Kyushu Electric Power Co., Kyushu Industries Transportation Holdings Co., Kumamoto Telecasting Co., Saishunkan Pharmaceutical Co., Kyushu Sanko Unyu Co. and Sankei Building Co. was formed to pursue the project. The concession contract for KMJ will include management rights over the terminals, runways and car-park for a 33 year term, with the option to extend for a further 15 years (plus a further 10 years in the event of a natural disaster). The private operator will be expected to pursue route development, improve passenger services and attract LCC service to KMJ. The consortium paid in excess of USD95m which will be accompanied by a complete re-construction of the terminal buildings and other facilities. Construction of the new terminal building is scheduled to start in July 2020 and open in the Spring of 2023.
