In Sept 2017, The Andhra Pradesh (AP) gov’t awarded a concession to the AP Airports Development Corporation Ltd. (APADCL) and the Nellore Int’l Airport Private Ltd. (NIAPL) consortium to develop a greenfield airport at Dagadarthi in Nellore district. The project was awarded to the consortium on Design, Build, Finance, Operate and Transfer (BFOT) basis. In Dec 2021, the state gov’t approved the Detailed Project Report (DPR) submitted by the Andhra Pradesh Airports Development Corporation Limited (APADC), expediting construction works for a new domestic greenfield airport at Dagadarthi Mandal in Nellore District. The DPR was prepared by the Nellore Airport Corporation Limited (NACL), established to facilitate construction of the airport. The initial development area for the project was 1,379.71 acres, however the land requirement has increased to 1,861.2 acres to accommodate cargo operations. In January 2022, media reported that the first phase of construction works is expected to commence in Apr. 2022.
