NTE has been the subject of intense government focus over the past several years due to its rapid development and close vicinity to the city of Nantes. According to current operator VINCI, NTE has recorded substantial traffic growth of 91% over the past seven years, which VINCI indicates is the highest among French regional airports. Outgrowing its current capacity, plus noise impacts from increasing traffic, a new airport was approved for development through a 55-year concession with VINCI which commenced in 2010. The deal included design, financing, construction and operation of a new €450m greenfield airport, as well as operation of the NTE and Saint-Nazaire Montoir airports. In the face of local opposition to the project, the gov’t took the decision to cancel the project on Oct. 24, 2019 with termination of the VINCI concession scheduled to take effect on Dec. 15, 2021.
