Overview
In Sept 2020, the El Salvador gov’t announced that it is pursuing development of new greenfield airport in the eastern region of the country with target completion by Q1 2024. Part of the Cuscatlán Plan (Public Infrastructure), which identifies connectivity as a fundamental pillar for economic, social and human development, prioritizes execution of the National Plan, the project’s general objective is to provide airport connectivity to the eastern part of country, to foster economic development potential, encourage growth of int’l passengers demand, develop int’l tourism and activate the port of La Unión. Specific objectives include creating a competitive airport for the eastern region taking into account the future passenger traffic potential, increasing air traffic through new transportation routes, benefiting Salvadorians living abroad and generating new sources of employment in the airport industry. The project also aims to stimulate economic potential of the eastern zone and position it as a fundamental pillar of the national economy, promoting inclusion, social responsibility and local development, exploiting hotel, ecotourism, archaeological, gastronomic and sports development potential in the eastern region, strengthening national security through technological equipment for air navigation and drug trafficking control, developed within the framework of national and international standards and regulations (IATA, ICAO, AAC).
