In March 2019, the Gov’t of Barbados announced plans to concession GAIA, which may also include share options for GAIA employees and the National Insurance Scheme. The IFC, as grantor’s advisor, will guide the bid process and assist in attracting international operators and investors to compete for the project. The project will include rehabilitation of airport pavements and a 27,000 sq.m. expansion/improvement of the existing passenger terminal. In the first four years of the concession, the private operator is required to invest at least USD54m on “initial fundamentals” and a total of between USD260-300m over the concession term. In early Mar. 2020, it was reported that the airport union has been provided assurances by the gov’t that all GAIA staff will be transferred to the private operator and there will be no staff terminations.
