Aug. 2020 –  Originally conceived in 2009, the gov’t has re-initiated site selection process for development of a new international airport for Dhaka under a PPP framework. In 2011, the 723-square-kilometre Arial Beel in Munshiganj wetlands between the rivers Padma and Dhaleshwari, located 40 kilometres of Dhaka, was announced as the development site, however violent local protests against that site selection forced the government to abandon the plan. in 2016, the gov’t revived the project with appointment of Nippon Koei Bangladesh Ltd (NKBL) to conduct a feasibility and site selection study. In Mar. 2019 NKBL submitted a report to the Civil Aviation Authority identifying three potential sites. The government decision on site selection remains pending.

Sep. 18, 2021 –  A 22-member high-level delegation visited the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) to hold meetings with ministers and other dignitaries to further discuss a potential Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), proposed earlier in 2018, regarding a Public Private Partnership (PPP) initiative which could be facilitated under the KSA Public Investment Fund.
