Overview

In Jan 2018, the Turkish consortium responsible for development of the New Istanbul Airport submitted an offer to the Albanian gov’t to develop the new Vlorë airport, in support of the state’s aim to establish a national flag carrier (Air Albania). The offer of the Turkish consortium, was part of a broader gov’t-to-gov’t development initiative between Albania and Turkey. The new airport is projected to handle 200,000 pax annually on opening. Construction cost is estimated at just under €125m. In April 2019, the Turkish consortium announced it would be withdrawing from the Vlorë concession. The Istanbul municipality was reported to be the main financier of President Erdogan’s “prestige projects” domestically and abroad, including Vlorë airport, however as Erdogan’s party lost the mayor’s seat in Istanbul in the Mar. 31, 2019 municipal election, this key funding source is no longer available. In May 2019, the gov’t commissioned a feasibility study for the project.
